Dental crowding and spacing can impact oral health beyond appearance. Learn causes, risks, and modern orthodontic solutions from Bronsky Orthodontics.

Dental crowding and spacing issues are some of the most common reasons patients present for orthodontic treatment. Other issues include overbite, underbite, overlapping teeth, protruded teeth, spaced teeth, and more. While many assume orthodontic care revolves around personal aesthetic concerns, the reality is there are other reasons to pursue treatment. Misalignment of the teeth and jaw bones can cause lasting issues with oral health, jaw function and may contribute to long-term systemic health issues. Fortunately, with advancements in technology, there are more options than ever before to combat these issues. Dr. Mark Bronsky and his team are proud to be at the forefront of modern orthodontic care, offering expertise, knowledge and compassion to treat dental issues in order to ensure improved health for not just your mouth, but your entire being.

Understanding Dental Crowding and Spacing Problems - And Why They Matter

Dental crowding and spacing issues can stem from a variety of sources - some genetic, some environmental, and many are a combination. Research shows clear connections to a hereditary component, finding that genetics can play a large role in jaw size, tooth size, alignment, and spacing patterns. Many families have the same dental problems spanning multiple generations - you may even notice it within your own family. Environmental and behavioral factors play a role, as well. Lack of access to proper nutrition, clean water, and oral health education can increase the risk of oral health problems, impact tooth development, and ultimately create longer-lasting issues. Habits such as poor oral hygiene, thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and extended pacifier use can also impact the health, alignment and spacing of teeth.

Often, people feel self-conscious when they have visible problems with their teeth, but seeking out treatment has more benefits than just a straighter smile. Orthodontic treatment can also help to prevent and minimize the risk of tooth decay, physical trauma/breakdown, periodontal disease, jaw pain, self-esteem issues, and systemic health issues.  Your mouth has a direct connection to the most important systems in the body, and poor oral health can create risks for heart disease, inflammation, digestion, headaches, proper breathing, complications with diabetes, and more.

Treatment Options for Dental Spacing and Crowding

While people initially have no say in how their jaw and teeth are positioned due to genetics; the good news is that the solution is very much in their control. Modern methods of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics as well as new technology and ongoing research has made orthodontic care more accessible than ever before. Adults and children alike can take their health into their own hands by passing care over to professionals who understand the intricacies of the anatomy that comprise the oral cavity. Treatment options vary based on individual needs and goals, and each option presented and explained by our brilliant staff with your best interest at heart. Treatment options include:

  • Traditional BracesThe most familiar form of orthodontic treatment is traditional metal braces. Small stainless steel brackets are adhered to the teeth utilizing special bonding agents. Bands, or small rings, can also be placed on the posterior teeth in order to maximize retention and anchorage.  These brackets and bands allow wires and other auxiliaries to push, pull, and guide teeth to the corrected position. Traditional braces are a popular and effective option that have been used for decades..

Clear braces work similarly to traditional braces, but instead are comprised of transparent ceramic instead of stainless steel. The clear components make them a more discreet option for those who need orthodontic care but prefer a more subtle approach.

Lingual braces are a fixed alternative that is even more discreet than ceramic brackets and/or Invisalign®. Lingual braces incorporate specially designed stainless steel appliances that are adhered onto the back side of the teeth. While not suitable for every patient, they are a solid option for qualified candidates who wish to hide their appliances.

Invisalign® is a highly popular orthodontic treatment option for teenagers and adults who have mild to moderate treatment needs. Clear aligner treatment is most optimally undertaken by a Board Certified orthodontist to design optimal tooth movement utilizing custom-fitted clear plastic aligners to favorably move teeth. These aligners are removable, although they should be worn at least 21 hours per day. For those able to commit, they are a wonderful option that provides convenience with less disruption in everyday life.

At Bronsky Orthodontics, our team will evaluate your needs, determine the best treatment options for your situation and explain clearly and thoroughly what we believe would be the most efficient and effective course of action. We are a result-driven practice and the transformation we see in our patients - both physically and emotionally - is the best part of the job.
