Don’t Let Bad Breath Get the Better of You: How to Combat Halitosis When You Have Braces

No one likes having bad breath. It’s a one-way ticket to feeling self conscious any time you’re around anybody else. If you’re finding that you’re more prone to having bad breath now that you have braces on, not to worry. There are a few things you can do to combat an unfortunate case of halitosis.

Be Religious about Oral Hygiene

Bacteria and plaque are often the primary culprits behind bad breath. Braces can do wonders for straightening out your teeth, but they also add a whole new set of places where bacteria can breed and plaque can form, increasing your odds of dealing with bad breath. Thoroughly brushing your teeth after meals and flossing between each tooth are crucial to getting rid of bacteria, removing plaque, and preventing tartar buildup. For extra freshness, follow up with an antibacterial mouthwash.

Stay Hydrated

If you have a dry mouth, you may find yourself dealing with bad breath more often. You should be producing some quantity of saliva pretty much around the clock. Not everyone produces enough though. Without enough saliva, bacteria tends to thrive and cause bad breath. Staying adequately hydrated can help you produce an appropriate quantity of saliva to keep your mouth properly moisturized. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep your mouth rinsed and clean.

Choose Foods Carefully

Everyone knows that foods like garlic and onions lend themselves to more pungent breath. Strong smelling foods like these aren’t the only ones to watch out for. Because bacteria need a source of food in order to survive, and because they thrive off of sugars, it’s best to avoid sugary foods and drinks. Sticky foods can also be a problem since they can be tough to remove. Sugary and sticky foods are more likely to lead to dental problems including poor oral health and bad breath. This is why it’s better to avoid sugar-based breath freshening mints (sugar) and gum (sticky).

You don’t have to resign yourself to having bad breath just because you have braces. You may need to take more time and put more effort into having fresh breath, but it’s definitely something you can manage. Just be patient and diligent in your efforts and you’ll be bound to get the results you’re after.
