Phase II Orthodontic Treatment

image

Adolescent Orthodontic Care

After creating a healthy foundation for your child’s jaw structures and creating space for natural eruption of permanent teeth with Phase I treatment, Phase II therapy may be necessary to optimize alignment, position, and function of the teeth.

The goal is to create a bite that is self-protective during chewing and other oral functions to allow the teeth to protect each other for a lifetime. Proper arrangement and function of teeth result in ideal oral hygiene, chewing efficiency, and natural, favorable stimulation of the gums and bony support. Excellent alignment of teeth has the happy effect of allowing a patient to project a winning smile throughout their lifetime!

Following Phase I treatment, Phase II normally starts around ages 12 to 14 where we will use braces or removable clear aligner appliances (Invisalign®) to gradually shift position of the teeth, creating a healthier alignment and a more beautiful smile.

Patients who do not require Phase I therapy may also gain a healthier bite and beautiful cosmetics using braces or Invisalign®.

How is Phase II

Treatment Different from Phase I?

Phase II therapy, or Adolescent Orthodontic therapy, is implemented when a patient is in the beginning of the adolescent growth spurt, usually around 12 to 14 years. This is determined by both X-ray analysis of the spinal column as well as rapid changes in externally visible manifestations of growth.

Starting too early may damage roots of undeveloped teeth and may also require re-treatment as the patient may outgrow the effects of treatment if started too early. Phase II therapy only addresses alignment of teeth and bite correction.

How Long is Phase II Treatment?

Based on initial exam of the patient, estimated times for Phase II therapy can vary from 12 to 24 months. This depends a lot on excellent patient compliance with oral hygiene, regular attendance at appointments in the directed intervals, and use of intermaxillary elastics (rubber bands) where necessary. Treatment is a partnership and will always go smoothly with effective collaboration.

What Happens After Phase II?

Following completion of Phase II therapy, we’ll design and recommend specific retention mechanisms and protocols to maintain your results. Retainers may be removable or fixed and we will guide you after treatment to the best methods for a successful retention.
