Orthodontics is a Hot Trend Among Adults

Neon hues, chunky necklaces and mountain man beards- there are tons of trends buzzing in society today. Our favorite pick, however, is the growing trend of adult orthodontics.

Gorgeous smiles are in style. The American Association of Orthodontists says adults are seeking orthodontic treatment in record numbers. After surveying multiple AAO members in the U.S. and Canada about their patient numbers in 2012, the association found some telling statistics.

  • The number of adult patients climbed 14 percent from 2010 to 2012.
  • As of 2012, there was a record high of 1,225,850 patients ages 18 and older.
  • AAO members were treating 5,876,000 patients all ages in 2012- an increase of 20 percent compared to 2010 numbers.
  • Collectively, AAO members report treating at least one million adult patients each year since 2004.
  • In 2012, 44 percent of adult patients were male. That’s a 26 percent jump from figures in 2010.

Considering the recession struck just before the measured increase in treatment, these numbers are particularly impressive.

We offer a few motives for the growing popularity of adult orthodontics:

Better treatments. Orthodontists get it. No normal adult is eager to don bulky, conventional braces for years at a time. At Bronsky Orthodontics, we administer sleek and modern treatments better suited to meet the aesthetic demands of an adult. These include Invisalign, which employ clear, plastic aligners to gradually shift teeth into ideal position, and small, transparent braces. We also offer compact and smooth lingual braces that adhere to the back of the teeth, rendering them invisible!

Less commitment. Improvements in orthodontic technology are reducing treatment duration and time required in the orthodontist’s chair. Advanced orthodontic software programs offer unprecedented insight on jaw and tooth position, streamlining the treatment process. Every patient’s case presents unique challenges, but in 2012, the average time between appointments was six weeks. That same year, the average duration of treatment was only 22 months- less than two years. Not too bad, huh?

More inspiration. A stunning smile signifies success. Another study from the AAO found adults associated straight, beautiful teeth with professional accomplishment and a satisfactory social and love life.

“Adults have always desired a confident smile that makes them appear successful and attractive,” Dr. Mark Bronsky, a trusted provider of orthodontics in New York City. “I believe the uptick in adult orthodontics can be pinned on a drastic improvement in the convenience and appearance of treatment.”

We suspect the trend of adult orthodontics is here to stay. Orthodontic treatment no longer requires years of uncomfortable and highly visible metal braces. Our modern approach to tooth and jaw alignment means adult patients can finally achieve that envy-worthy grin without the hassle of dated methods.
