We are proud to be an elite provider of Invisalign, a cutting-edge treatment that effectively straightens teeth and corrects bites through a series of clear aligners. This treatment differs from traditional metal braces in a number of ways. To learn more about the Invisalign system, please read through some commonly asked questions below.
The Invisalign System is the alternative to braces, a virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth. Invisalign uses 3-D computer technology to create a series of clear aligners that are custom-made for you. Each set of aligners will gradually shift your teeth. When the last set of aligners is worn, your teeth should have shifted enough to reach the alignment desired by your Upper East Side and TriBeCa orthodontist.
While this varies on a case-by-case basis, the average amount of time it will take for the Invisalign process to be completed is about 15-18 months. Please talk to your doctor to determine the exact amount of time the treatment will take.
On a daily basis, the aligners will have to be worn for about 22 hours. Each set of aligners you’re given should be worn for about two to three weeks.
Your doctor will schedule regular appointments for you, about once every six to eight weeks. This is to make sure that your treatment plan is progressing as expected.
Patients may experience very mild tooth discomfort when starting each new set of aligners, but this is normal and it’s nothing to worry about. The discomfort will go away after a few days and is much less prevalent than the discomfort associated with traditional metal braces.
Much like other orthodontic treatments, Invisalign may temporarily affect your speech and give you a minor lisp for a day or two. However, this will pass shortly after your tongue gets used to the aligners.
The best way to clean your aligners is to use the Invisalign cleaning kit. If you don’t have this kit, then the next best option is to brush them with toothpaste in lukewarm water.
No, the gum will stick to the aligners. However, you can still chew gum as long as you remove the aligners.
It is highly unlikely that your aligners will fall off while sleeping, just as it’s unlikely that they would fall off during any other activity. The aligners are custom-made and designed to fit firmly on your teeth so they shouldn’t fall off.
Most doctors will recommend that a patient who has completed any kind of orthodontic treatment, whether it’s braces or Invisalign, should wear a retainer afterward. This will prevent your teeth from gradually shifting back into misalignment.
